SUPPOSITORIES AND PESSARIES

DEFINITION:    Suppositories are solid dosage form containing medicaments intended for insertion in to the body cavities other than mouth TYPES OF SUPPOSITORIES 1.Rectal suppositories: they are meant for introduction in to the rectum and generally weigh 1 to 2 grms .They are either cone or torpedo in shape. 2.vaginal suppositories(pessaries): They are meant for introduction in to the vagina and generally weigh 4 to 8 grams. They are either cone,rod,and wedge in shape. 3.Urethral suppositories: They are meant for introduction in to the urethra.Thrir weight is usually 1gram and length is about 8cm.They are thin and cylindrical in shpe. 4.Nasal suppositories: They are meant for introduction in to the nasal cavity.Their weight is about 1 gram and about 9 to 10 cms long. They are thin and cylindrical in shape. 5.Ear cones: They are meant for introduction in to the ear.They are very rarely used.Their weight is about 1gram.They are thin and cylindrical in shape.
